Creating a Salmon Return through City-Center Walla Walla

 

This evening President Dave called our meeting to order at 7:07 PM. We had 14 members and guest in attendance.

The Order of Business was short, with Treasurer Doug reporting that we had a bank balance of $1688.45. President Dave, and Doug brought up that the Bank wants us to reestablish the club as a 501c, since we gave up the umbrella 501c by being a member club of the Federation of Fly Fishers, when we left that organization.

Secretary Dale gave a brief synopsis of March’s meeting with guest speaker Lonnie and Grant Richie, discussing with video presentation of their NE Oregon guide services.

This evening we had Andrew “Drew” Trogstad-Isaacson, Assist. Director of the Water & Environmental Center at Walla Walla Community College for our speaker.

Drew talked about the functions of the Water & Environmental Center, and the co-ordination the Center has with local water authorities, the ConfederatedTribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR), and Tri-States Steelheaders. Most interesting is the program that Drew currently is working with to establish a salmon run on Mill Creek running through City Center – Walla Walla.
A large part of the salmon restoration of Mill Creek originates with the CTUIR salmon fish hatchery on the upper Walla Walla River. This CTUIR / BPA project, with the assistance of the Tri-State Steelheaders has brought recovery attempt to local – area school districts to create an educational and hands-on experience.

If you would like to take part in a walk-through of this project, to see what is happening - there will be a tour along Mill Creek on Saturday May 18 starting at 11 AM.
